Baby Black Mamba found at a Westville home

Highway snake catcher, Nick Evans says the snake was around the metre mark in height and about a year old.

THE search for a Black Mamba at a home in Westville proved to be a challenge for Highway snake catcher, Nick Evans.

Evans said he received a call on Sunday morning, (February 20).

“The homeowner, who has called me before for a mamba, was outside, when he saw the mamba enter his front door. I went with my friend and fellow mamba lover, Warren Friedman, who lived nearby,” said Evans.

This was not an easy search as the couple was moving, and the house was full of boxes.

“We searched and searched, with the homeowners helping. They weren’t too bothered. They like snakes. Eventually, they told us not to worry, and that they’d call if they saw it again,” said Evans.

As they walked out the door, an object against the wall, in the doorway, caught Evan’s eye.

“I moved it back, and sure enough, there was the mamba. After all that effort,” laughed the snake catcher.

“It was a very small Black Mamba, around the meter mark, about a year old. Cute little thing. Still, highly venomous! I will collect data off of it, for our ongoing research, before releasing it.’

Evans was grateful to the family for calling, and Friedman for his help in the rescue.
