Assistant librarian, Zodwa Dladla read to the children a story by Mabel Mesa, A Party at the Park.

She said the day is about celebrating the power of reading aloud.

“It encourages children and adults to grab a book, find an audience and read aloud,” she said.

Dlaldla emphasised the importance of reading.

“It is nice to grasp the concept of reading out loud at an early age, it opens and stimulates the mind,” she said.

New Germany Lutheran Primary School principal, Trish Bentley said it was a lovely educational morning shared by everyone.

“Our children were taught about the beauty of books and reading. Reading is an absolute necessity in life and to start introducing reading to your child at an early age is a gift all on its own, your child starts to recognise words and sounds, this is very important for them as they build a foundation at an early stage in life and grow from it,” said Bentley.

According to Bentley, the gift of reading allows a child to obtain knowledge and understanding.

“One on one reading with your child also allows one on one time with each other, it is very important to spend time with your dear child or children due to the fast pace of living now days, many parents find it hard to put a side time as they have busy schedules,” she said.

Bentley advised parents to put aside 15 to 30 minutes of their busy schedule to sit and connect with their children.

“Reading with them is one of the most important life skills you can teach them. As you get into a routine of reading your will see how your child will blossom and grow,” she added.

After listening to the story, learners were asked questions and given prizes.
