Growing concern over Pinetown massive pothole

A Highway motorist, Kevin Allan has called for the authorities to have a permanent solution for all the potholes on the roads instead of doing 'patch' jobs.

A LARGE pothole on Underwood Road, Pinetown, has become a nightmare and accident hazard for a local motorist as it remains unrepaired months after being reported.

Kevin Allan who travels on the road everyday to get to work said it was concerning that the hole has not been attended to.

Allan said he personally reported the pothole in May last year, “It has been nine months and nothing has been done and no one seems to care. I have reported this issue on numerous occasions, the pothole is now down three layers of tar,” he said.

“Unfortunately for me I use this route each morning and I can not ignore it which is the reason I have reported it numerous times,” said Allan.

He said the pothole forces motorists to take evasive action to avoid it. “What’s more, if a car could end up in that hole, it can potentially damage tyres and cost the driver thousands of rands.

“Who will be liable to pay for that damage for something that could have been avoided, already Durban motorist are spending tens of thousands of rand to repair cars damaged by unprotected holes in city roads, it just unfair,” he said.

There were no warning signs or barriers in place when the Highway Mail visited the scene on Monday morning.

Allan called for the authorities to have a permanent solution for all the potholes on the roads instead of doing ‘patch’ jobs. “Many years ago, they used to take preventative measures which lasted for years, why can’t they implement the same procedure again to solve all of this?” asked Allan.

The eThekwini Municipality was not available for comment by the time of going to print.
