The devastating fire started in the children's bedroom and spread throughout the two-bedroom flat.

AMID tragic circumstances, the true spirit of ubuntu, and a sense of community radiated in Hillary through acts of kindness.

Residents banded together to assist a family whose possessions were lost after a fire ripped through their home on Sunday, January 30.

The devastating fire started in the children’s bedroom and spread throughout the two-bedroom flat. According to the family, no one was in the flat when the fire broke out.

“The fire started in our children’s bedroom and everything that was in there is gone. We are staying with a friend in the area at the moment,” said the distraught father of three, Tendai Ndadzungira.

The family tried salvaging items from the home and with the help of friends went through their belongings.

Most items are burnt beyond recognition.

“We managed to get most things from the kitchen but everything that was in the bedrooms is burnt. The children were playing outside the flat at the time when they noticed smoke coming out of the window. I work as a truck driver and was on my way to Johannesburg at the time. I immediately turned around when I heard the news. It was terrible hearing about the fire. We lost our hard-earned belongings,” he said.

The fire started in the children’s room before ripping through the flat and destroying all of the family’s possessions.

Ndadzungira said he is incredibly thankful for all those who supported his family during the horrific ordeal.

“The community helped us a lot and made food parcels for us. We are very grateful for the community, we didn’t know such people existed and we are so grateful. Thank you to everyone who helped us,” he added.

Members of the Malvern Community Policing Forum (CPF) assisted the family by collecting clothes, food, bedding, and other household items.

“We were saddened by the fire that has caused havoc to the family. The residents have been wonderful and have already started dropping off items that will be donated,” said Malvern CPF chairperson, Kevin Pillay.
