Westville Boys’ High dominates pool and pitch

WBHS will take on Hilton College away this coming weekend.

WESTVILLE Boys’ High School (WBHS) had a positive start to its summer sport season at the weekend, with convincing wins against Maritzburg College in both cricket and water polo.

In water polo, the U14 teams played their first games in the pool.

The U14B match, in particular, was an exciting affair that ended with a thrilling 7 – 7 draw, while the U14A team had a frustrating game that gave College a good challenge, but lost 4 – 7.

The U15B team, on the other side of the pool, cruised to a 7 – 1 win.

The U15A team played some good, structured polo throughout the game and managed to come away with a solid 8 – 3 victory. The 4th team went down with 7 – 8. The 3rd team recorded a comprehensive 10-3 win.

The proud coach and head of aquatics, Jarred Appelgryn, reported that it was the WBHS 1st team that really stepped up on the day.

“A packed College supporters’ stand did not deter the Westville boys and they controlled the game from the outset, scoring two goals in the first chukka and then continued on this streak with Aaron Tarr amassing eight goals to stamp his authority on the game,” he said.

The final score was 15 – 3 to Westville.

Cricket

WBHS won the toss and decided to bowl on a good cricket wicket. The bowlers came out firing and put College under pressure by getting them 44/4 at the 1st drinks break.

WBHS bowled College out for 151 with the wickets split across the board. Both Nathan Ngugi and Hamza Mahomed picked up figures of 3/28 and 3/31 as an opening pair.

WBHS set out to chase the 152 in a very aggressive manner with an opening partnership of 87/0 in 14 overs.Aryan Gopalan was the first to fall with an explosive 52. Blake Simpson, who ended on 33, steadied the ship with the newcomer to the side, Romashan Pillay, who ended on 48 not out. He managed to get WBHS over the line to seal a seven wicket win over Maritzburg College.
