Summer rains boost KZN dam levels

The rainfall has resulted in a significant improvement in dam levels in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.

THE weekly report on the state of reservoirs, issued by the Department of Water and Sanitation, shows that dam levels in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) have continued to increase.

The dam levels stand at 81.7%, a jump from last week’s 78.5%.

The department’s spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau, said the increase in dam levels was welcomed, although it did come as a surprise.
“Like most parts of the country, KZN has experienced a lot of rain, which means dams in the province have been filling up. We normally expect the rainy weather during February and March,” said Ratau.

Even though the dams are filling up, Ratau reminded citizens to continue to use water sparingly.

The Umgeni Water Supply System is looking healthy at 94.1%, which is a considerable jump from 91.4%.

Inanda Dam dropped by 2%, landing at 102.4%.
Midmar Dam remained at 101.5%.
Driel Barrage, Zaaihoek and Bivane dams were all unchanged at 87.2%, 75.4% and 72.9% respectively.
Woodstock Dam took a dip from 96.1% to 95.5%.
Spring Grove Dam passed the 100% mark and is currently at 103%.
Hazelmere Dam dropped from last week’s 65% to 53%.
