Motoring eras revisited through beautiful dioramas

This year's theme for the diorama competition was My Car Dealership/Used Car Lot.

THE Natal Diecast Model Collectors (NDMC) held the Rod Guérin Annual Diorama Competition at the Vintage and Veteran Car Club in Kloof recently.

Cedric Getkate’s diorama won the beautiful floating trophy – a beautifully mounted and Perspex enclosed model of a 1937 Studebaker Coupe Express Pick-Up

This year’s theme for the diorama competition was My Car Dealership/Used Car Lot. Getkate’s description of his winning diorama was entitled Memory Lane Motors. He explained his diorama as his depiction of a used car dealership pre-1970s.

“The models I have chosen are very much a glimpse into the period from 1940 to 1970. I remember these from my younger days. As you take a trip down memory lane and enjoy a look into the Golden Years of Motoring, nostalgic memories may come to mind when looking at these cars from an era long gone.”

Getkate said his diorama’s depicted years dominated by automobile brands such as Austin, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Desoto, Dodge, Ford, Lincoln, MG, Morris, Oldsmobile, Opel, Packard, Plymouth, Pontiac and Studebaker.

“You may see some of these in my diorama, while some of these models sadly no longer exist. I hope you enjoy the journey and happy motoring,” Getkate told members, visitors and judges during the competition.

Runner-up in the diorama competition was Kevin Taylor, who also won the Geoff Sear Floating Trophy for Enthusiast of the Year.

The members of the NDMC collect mainly diecast models – Dinky, Corgi, Matchbox, Lesney Models of Yesteryear, Hotwheels etc. They buy, sell and horse-trade their models with other members. Meetings take place every second month at the VCC in Kloof. For more information, visit www.ndmc.co.za
