Hillcrest garden competition promotes cleanliness

HILLCREST couple, Clive and Lyn McKeown showed off their green fingers as they were the recipients of the Pomona Gardens’ garden competition.

The competition was judged by the Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association (KHBA), a non-profit organisation that aims to promote a cleaner and more beautiful environment in and around Hillcrest.

The aim of the competition, now in its second year, is to encourage Pomona Gardens residents to beautify and take better care of their gardens as well as enhance the overall look of the complex.

The prize money was sponsored by the Richden’s Village and the Pomona Gardens also made a donation to KHBA.

KHBA’s chairperson, Marge Mitchell, shared three water wise and easy to maintain plants for beginner gardeners:

Aptonia cordifolio: This succulent groundcover is a favourite for dry patches of soil where other plants may struggle. It can be used as a lawn replacement for difficult to reach areas.

Tulbaghia violecea: Tulbaghia (Wild Garlic) has a long flowering period and, when mass planted, creates a stunning display with its pinkish-mauve flowers. It can survive extended dry spells and is a fuss-free plant.

Bulbine: These clump-forming groundcovers have tubular, succulent green leaves, giving them a grass-like appearance. They can be mass planted for a water-wise border, or added to a verge to cover bare patches of soil.
