Clean-up unites Upper Highway communities

The enviro champs appealed to residents to stop illegal dumping and commit to taking part in clean-up campaigns.

A GROUP of 70 people teamed up to remove piles of litter from the Old Butlers Farm and were able to collect 395 bags of trash.

One of the organisers, Mélanie Harmse said this would not have been possible without the many hands involved as the support helped reduce the workload.

“I can say we are very proud of the job we did in just two hours,” she said.

Harmse appealed to residents to stop illegal dumping and urged people to take part in clean-up campaigns.

“Together, we can fight this and make a difference. This dumping just ruins our beautiful areas,” she said.

In addition, the nature lover thanked Jane Schofield, the Move One Million-Upper Highway group leader; Richard Hipkins and his Crestwatch team; the children from Siyajabula Orphanage in Molweni; Nonsikelelo Pearl Msomi, the DA ward councillor; and the Crestholme and Molweni communities for helping with the clean-up.

“There is always hope when a community gets together and strives to achieve what we all want. We have to become doers to move forward,” she said.

The black bags were picked up by Durban Solid Waste.
