Educator launches a simplified maths book

With his book title, Relevant Mathematics, Vuma Nkala, hopes to make learners fall in love with the subject at a young age.

SHONGWENI educator, Vuma Nkala has written a book, Relevant Mathematics, to simplify and make maths fun for Grade 6 learners.

The 40-year-old is not new to the publishing world – he has written five books in the past on religion.

Being a maths teacher for 15 years, Nkala said the country needed more people to take up the subject and he believes this book can help people grab the concept at a young age.

“For a long period, there has been a stigma attached to it that it is a difficult subject. I hope this book brings out a positive outcome and my biggest wish is for it to make learners fall in love with maths,” he said.

To achieve this, Nkala has simplified the subject, and in the 200 pager book, he used pictures, games and word sets to make it fun.

The Charles Memorial educator said it took him a year to write this book which is in line with current school policy.

“My dream is for this book to come in a kit and include a watch, scale, tape measure and a temperature. I want learners to experiment and have practicals, instead of just theory. Maths is fun, practical and very important, even in our daily lives,” he said.

According to Nkala, in South Africa there is a shortage of engineers, so by making learners love the subject at a young age, we can make a difference.

To make this a success, the educator said he is calling for people to partner with him in this initiative so that his book can reach more children.
