Sewage leak spills into Ashley homes

Almost a month later, residents in Davel Road are still surrounded by a disgusting smell and sight despite being promised that the matter will be attended to urgently.

ASHLEY residents have been forced to endure a smell of sewage flowing through their residential properties.

The irate residents in Davel Road said although they have been promised that this will be treated as matter of urgency, almost a month later, nothing has been done.

One of the residents, Simone Maharaj said the sewage oozes at the back of their family home.

Simone Maharaj said they to cover up the sewage that spills into their family home.

“We also rent out some of the rooms. This situation is so unhealthy. The worst is that we have small children and one of the tenants has a newborn baby and the sewage runs past just outside her door.

Maharaj said they have resorted to cutting a three meter hole in the pipe so that water can come out.

“It just a mess and this is ridiculous. On some days the smell is unbearable and the sight of it is just disgusting.

According to the resident when the matter was first reported, four men came and promised to return with a truck as there was a blocked drain just down the road from the affected houses.

“We were told this matter will be prioritised because it is an unhygienic problem,” said the frustrated resident.

Another resident, Chris Page said they are now forced to keep their doors and windows closed due to the stench that culminates from his backyard.

“We cannot even have visitors, we feel like prisoners in our own home. The sewage comes through the fence and goes straight into my swimming pool. We just do not know what to do anymore as were promised that this will be treated as an urgent matter,” he said.

The Highway Mail sent a query to the eThekwini Municipality but received no response by the time of going to print.
