Northdene peacock thieves slapped with fine

After stealing the peacock, the two suspects were spotted attempting to break into a vehicle in eMdloti.

TWO thieves, who stole a peacock from a Nothdene home in October last year, were fined and sentenced for the theft of the bird as well as attempted car theft in eMdloti, north of Durban.

The thieves, Njabulo Shandu and Sanele Zindela were apprehended by the Durban North police on Umhlanga Rocks Drive in a high-speed pursuit after they crashed their vehicle.

Durban North SAPS spokesman, Captain Raymond Deokaran said the suspects were found in possession of a stolen male peacock as well as car-breaking implements.

“On the day of the incident, the suspects were spotted attempting to break into a vehicle in eMdloti. A high-speed chase ensued between Marshall Security and the suspects. The duo eventually lost control of the vehicle, a red Toyota Eitos, on Umhlanga Rocks Drive, where they capsized and rolled down a bank.

“When security and police opened the boot, they were surprised to see a peacock (the accused were caught on camera stealing the bird earlier that morning) as well as a bucket containing various traditional medicines. Both Shandu and Zindela were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years, as well as a fine of R5 000. In addition, they paid R10 000 into the Criminal Asset Recovery Fund (CARA),” he said.

Deokaran also congratulated the investigating officer, detective constable Nhlakanipho Ngcobo, for his work on the case.
