Patrollers clean up New Germany Post Office

The patrollers said they will continue to monitor the place and have hired a car guard to clean the premises on daily basis.

ARMED with brooms, spades, rakes and gloves, the new Germany Neighbourhood Watch patrollers took it upon themselves to clean up the area outside the New Germany Post Office.

The initiative was taken following the story published in the Highway Mail about the shocking state the post office was in. The area had been taken over by vagrants and mounds of litter covered the premises.

The post box passages were filled dirty clothes, blankets and mattresses. One of the organisers, Johan Kruger said they could not sit and watch their neighbourhood ‘go down the drain’.

“We did not know that the post office has been abandoned,” he said.

During the clean up, Kruger said more than 50 bags of rubbish were collected.

“We found lots of paper and glass. We hired three men to assist us,” he said.

Since the clean-up, which was hosted on Friday, October 29, the patrollers said they have been monitoring the area and have hired one of the car guards to clean up the area regularly.

Kruger said, as a neighbourhood watch, they are involved in many programmes and they do it voluntarily.

“We always appreciate funding. During looting, the money we had was used to fill up on fuel as we were on the road trying to save the neighbourhood. We also use the funds to install cameras on our streets,” he said.

Businesses that would like to support the neighbourhood watch can contact Kruger on 066 582 3228 or Lynn Robson on 082 493 4544.
