Pinetown foundation empowers women with sewing skills

The Women in Fashion project's goal is to provide women with skills, paired with the entrepreneurial spirit.

THE Invest in Dignity Foundation is teaching women sewing skills for free to upskill them and help them generate an income.

The foundation, which is powered by the Supa Mama retail brand in Westmead is passionate about women empowerment. Through its Women in Recycling project, that started a few years ago, about 300 women have been trained to hygienically collect, sort and grade waste material.

The waste is then recycled to re-enter the economic system as a valuable material, preventing it from going to landfill and gives women across industries access to necessary skills and the confidence to support themselves.

Invest in Dignity Foundation’s head of fashion, Nosihle Mangwe with student, Lerato Tebejane.

The group’s recent project, Women in Fashion, is led by Nosihle Mangwe, who is on the lookout for more women to upskill in the free five-day sewing training programme.

“We have been running this project for two weeks and we teach women basic sewing skills, budget and sustainability.

“By this, we hope to provide the women with skills, paired with the entrepreneurial spirit that is instilled in these women, and enable them to feed their families and educate their children, breaking the vicious cycle of poverty in South Africa,” said Mangwe.

“It is a very simplified training for beginners but caters for everyone,” added Mangwe.

One of the women who attended the training, Lerato Tebejane said she was happy that she is now able to use a sewing machine.
