‘Creep’ it real with family fun run for fur-kids

The venue has changed from Suncoast Casino to Bike and Bean for the start of the fun run/walk.

SOMETHING spooky is in the air as local non profit company, Stray Paws animal rescue and welfare gets ready to host their Halloween Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, October 30.

The event will begin at 07:30 and the fun-run-route will take participants form Bike and Bean to Blue Lagoon and back, racking up just over 5km. The event aims to raise much-needed funds for the organisation.

“It’s for the whole family. There will be a jumping castle for children and a treasure hunt on the beach. We will have dogs and puppies up for adoption, so there will be a puppy pen as well. We will also have a merchandise table,” said event organizer and Stray Paws member, Shabnam Baran.

“Children will get free treats and there will be lovely prizes to be won for all the events,” she added.

The event also allows the NPO a chance to give their fur-kids a day out.

“Some of these animals are so badly abused that it takes time to rehabilitate them and find homes for them, so they stay in kennels. This event is going to be an opportunity for those animals to come out and be among people. Kennel life is not good for animals, so we try to find homes for them as quickly as possible. This is also a great chance for people to play and interact with the animal. If they like the animal they can apply to adopt,” said Baran.

Families can even bring their fur-kids to the event, although all dogs will have to be kept on leads.

There will also be a ‘trick and treat’ station where the NPO will collect fur-kid friendly treats.

“Funds raised will help us pay out vet bills. We work a lot in informal settlements where we rescue abandoned, stray, sick and abused animals. We take them to the vet for a check up and to be sterilised, vaccinated and de-wormed. Thereafter we find homes for the animals. The only way for us to do this work is to raise funds by hosting events,” added Baran.

She noted that Covid-19 regulations have limited fundraising events.

“We have had donations of dog food, which we are so grateful for, but we still need more, because we feed up to 120 dogs peer day,” said Baran.

“The impact of Covid-19 has also caused a lot of economic challenges for the community. A lot of families cannot afford to keep their pets. A lot of people are surrendering their animals that they kept for years- not because they want to, but because they are forced to dye to financial challenges. Part of the initiative of Stray Paws is to supply dog food to those families, rather than have those animals displaced,” added Shalen Naidoo of Stray Paws.

Tickets for the fun run are R100 for adults and and R10 for children. For more information, call or Whatsapp 067 698 9876.
