WESTVILLE Boys’ High School’s new matric area was brought to life with an incredible 8m mural of a griffon, painted by the well-known and talented Highway artist, Giffy Duminy.
A griffin, the king of the land and sky, is a creature of legend and has the body, tail, and hind legs of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. The lion symbolises courage, strength, and heart while the eagle represents wisdom, focus and resilience.

WBHS’s communications manager, Lyndy Coombe said the griffin has been incorporated into all aspects of school life.
“When the school badge was first designed, the griffin became a central figure alongside the Lamp of Learning, the Book of Knowledge and the Outspan Tree,” she said.
According to Coombe, the griffin was ‘to indicate that the learner should combine intelligence with strength’.

“The griffin speaks to the heart of every Westville boy and creates a culture that drives the high-performance actions needed for success, and has been incorporated into all aspects of school life,” said a proud Coombe
The school thanked all of the parents and boys who made this possible, and conveyed a huge thank you to Duminy for his outstanding work.
