HILLCREST SAPS has once again issued a warning to residents as the Upper Highway-based station has noticed an increase in fraud cases.
According to the station’s communications officer, Capt. Linzi Smith, numerous residents reported fraudulent activities at ATMs as well as the theft of speed point machines, motor vehicles and power tools.

She said fraudsters constantly seek new ways to defraud unsuspecting consumers.
“We have noticed a new trend with the theft of speed points from petrol stations. False documents are also being submitted to hire power tools and purchase vehicles from dealerships,” she said.
To avoid becoming a victim, Smith advised the public to exercise caution and remain vigilant of their surroundings. She urged residents to contact their bank/branch immediately if they suspect they have been a victim of fraud.

“It is also important to constantly familiarise yourself with the latest trends that fraudsters are using to evade being another statistic or victim,” said Smith.
Hillcrest SAPS shared the following tips to help keep the public safe:
- Always keep your ATM pin confidential and never write it down or share it with anyone.
- Stand as close as possible to the ATM and never let anyone stand close or distract you.
- When transacting, cover the keypad with your hand. Smith said scammers can place cameras to record your pin as it is punched in on the keypad.
- Do not enter your pin on a screen that is unfamiliar to you. Carefully read the instructions on the ATM screen before entering your pin.
- Once cash has been withdrawn, immediately place it out of sight. Avoid handling cash in public view and secure your wallet and handbag before leaving the ATM.
- Set a realistic daily limit on your account to protect yourself, should your details be compromised. Check your statements regularly and report suspicious transactions immediately.
- Be wary of strangers that may call you back to the ATM to complete a transaction. They often ask for assistance or offer to assist you.
- Never force your card into the ATM. If the card is not easily accepted by the device, it may have been tampered with by criminals. Never use an ATM if it looks faulty or shows evidence of tampering.
- Do not post images of your cash on social media.\
- If you forgot your bank card, make use of the safe and secure cardless cash withdrawals at the ATM.
- When people submit documents to companies, a background check should be done on the person before the vehicles or tools are released.
