Puppy’s ears mutilated by owners to resemble power breed

A member of the public initially reported that a puppy was chained up on the property.

WHAT was initially a callout for a puppy on a chain soon became a case of animal cruelty when the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s inspector reported the puppy’s ears were mutilated and ‘cut off’.

The animal welfare’s inspector, Israel Silevu, responded to a cruelty complaint from a member of the public who reported a puppy that was kept on a chain.

“When inspector Silevu arrived, he found the puppy was not chained up, but that her ears had been mutilated. When questioned, her owners said they had done it as they had seen many other dogs with the same ‘cropped ears’. It was evident that she needed veterinary treatment immediately,” said the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s Brigitte Ferguson.

The dog was surrendered to the non-profit organisation and was taken directly to the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s clinic and her treatment was started.

She was scheduled for surgery as cartilage was exposed on both of her ears.

“She was named Annie, and as she healed over the last few days, has become the happiest soul. She was underweight, in dire need of veterinary treatment and a good diet when she arrived. After receiving the best care in our clinic, and being placed on Hill’s Pet Nutrition, she has completely come out of her shell and her personality shines bright,” said Ferguson.

Annie will be available for adoption and a case of animal cruelty has been opened.

“Thank you to the caring member of the public who reported the case as well as to inspector Silevu, our clinic team, and vet, Dr.Ramnanan” she said.
