Stranded turtle to make full recovery at uShaka
In just three weeks, the young turtle has made incredible strides in his recovery.
AFTER three weeks of rehabilitation at uShaka Sea World, Loki, a juvenile green turtle, is on his way to a full recovery.
According to Saambr’s spokesman, Ann Kunz, the turtle was found stranded on Zinkwazi’s main beach on July 7.
“As radiographs of his lungs showed some irregularities suggesting possible infection, Loki was placed on two courses of antibiotics and left to rest in a shallow pool under the watchful eyes of the rehabilitation team,” said Kunz.
Since his admission, Loki has shown a steady improvement and is now eating both fish and codium (seaweed). The codium is left in his pool so he can graze on it throughout the day while the fish is offered to him twice a day.

“After being weighed, he was given a general health check and had his carapace scrubbed to remove some algae. Because the weather has been chilly lately and the water temperature has dropped, Loki is being kept in a shallow temperature-controlled pool. As soon as it warms up, Loki will be moved to a deeper pool where he can practicing diving,” she said.
The team said that even though Loki is still positively buoyant, he is en route to make a full recovery and will be well enough to return to the ocean.
