Kloof SPCA confirms positive rabies case

The NPO noted that pet owners are required to, by law, have their animals vaccinated against rabies every year.

A STRAY dog, recently collected by the Kloof and Highway SPCA in the Westmead area, was confirmed to have rabies.

The non-profit organisation received a call about a stray dog that was ‘behaving strangely’ and one of its inspectors was dispatched to the area.

“He managed to catch the dog and brought it back to our SPCA. We were sure that this was another rabies case due to the behaviour of the dog. We sent it to be tested and, as we thought, the rabies test was confirmed as positive,” said the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s Brigitte Ferguson.

Ferguson noted that by law, in KwaZulu-Natal, all pets needed to be vaccinated against rabies annually. This is to ensure the vaccine remains effective.

“Vaccinating your pet against rabies is not only for your pet’s safety, but also ensures the safety of your family and community as rabies is fatal,” said Ferguson.
