Crime stats show an increase in most Highway areas

See the crime stats from the Hillcrest, Mariannhill, Pinetown, Westville Inchanga police stations.

MINISTER of Police, General Bheki Cele, released stats reflecting on crimes that occurred from April 1 to the end of June 2021, earlier today. 

The Highway area’s police stations showed an increase across most areas of serious crimes during this period.

Pinetown:

Murder increased by 83.3% from six cases reported to 11 cases. The cases of attempted murder showed a massive increase from seven cases to 23 cases reported.

The rape cases revealed an increase of 20.0%. It increased by one from five reported cases to six cases.

Cases of carjacking increased by 83.3%, from six to 11 reported cases.

Robbery at residential premises increased from eight to 12 reported cases. 

Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition recorded a 60.0% increase, from five to eight reported cases.

Westville: 

Only one case of murder case was reported at Westville SAPS  while attempted murder saw an increase of 300.00% from one reported case to four.

The increase in rape cases were 200%, an increase from four to 12 cases reported.

Carjacking recorded one case, an increase from zero.

Robbery at residential premises increased by 133.3%, from six reported cases to 14 cases.

Two cases of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition were reported, an increase from zero.

Hillcrest:

The station recorded a 10.0% increase in murder cases.

Attempted murder cases showed a decrease from 10 to three reported cases.

Rape cases recorded an increase of 600.0% cases, from three reported cases to 21.

Robbery at residential premises increased from 12 cases to 27 cases, 125.0% while cases illegal possession of firearms and ammunition dropped from three to one reported case.

Mariannhill: 

Murder cases increased by 5.0% with 21 reported cases from 20 cases while attempted murder saw an increase of 26.1 % from 23 to 29 recorded cases.

Rape cases also increased from 14 to 18 reported cases, a 28.6% increase.

Carjacking recorded a 5.0% increase from 20 to 21 reported cases.

Robbery at residential premises recorded a 16.7% increase, an increase from 18 to 21 cases.

Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition saw a zero percent increase as there were seven cases reported during both periods.

Inchanga: 

Murder cases recorded a decrease from 11 to nine reported cases.

Attempted murder also decreased from five to four reported cases.

Rape cases increased by 133.3%, with three reported from the previous period to seven.

Carjacking also showed a decrease from 11 cases to nine reported cases.

Robbery at residential premises increased by 60.0%, from five to eight reported cases.

Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition recorded a massive decrease of -83.3%, a drop from six cases to one reported case.
