Hillcrest High School former learner paints mural of hope

Dawn Melanie Morey said art is a form of healing and recovery.

IN keeping with the profound words of Pablo Picasso, who once said, “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life,” a former Hillcrest High School learner has used her artistic skills to create a beautiful mural following the recent unrest.

Dawn Melanie Morel said art really proves its worth and provides solace and therapy during stressful times. What’s more it is a form of healing and recovery.

Hillcrest High School headmaster, Craig Girvin said the community has faced a lot of sadness recently and the school is grateful to Morey for the beautiful art.

Crowning the Hillcrest High School badge is the brown-hooded Kingfisher (local to the area) which Dawn has gracefully and creatively illustrated, with two other kingfishers.

“So for those local to the area, we recommend some ‘art therapy’ by driving past Hillcrest High School in Ridge Road to see Dawn’s masterpiece,” said Girvin.

The former learner said she jumped at the chance to paint this wall when she was commissioned.

“An epic location, and as a past pupil of the school, this was a chance to give back and pass art on to a future generation of children just as I had once been. Besides, who wouldn’t be excited when asked to paint the walls of the school they attended, the teenage me would be so proud. A big undertaking on a huge wall, but so much fun,” she said.
