Vine Snake slithers into commercial chicken farm

The highly venomous reptile was seen by one of the workers at the chicken farm.

LOCAL snake expert, Nick Evans was called out to capture and remove a Vine Snake at a Durban south-based commercial chicken farm recently.

The highly venomous Vine Snake was spotted by a worker while collecting eggs. Evans made his way to the farm and was worried the chickens would kill the snake before he arrived.

“Chickens will kill small snakes. There is certainly no way a Vine Snake is going to eat a chicken. Personally, I’m unaware of records of them eating bird eggs, but if they do, a chicken egg would be a big ask,” said Evans.

When he arrived, the snake was found lying against a wall. It was deftly scooped up and placed inside a bucket without any fuss.

“Although, when I took it out again to show the staff outside, it was a bit more of a handful. These are highly venomous snakes although are very docile, if left alone. Problems start when people try catching or killing them,” he said.

The snake was about 1m in length and was released in a safe area after its capture.

“The farm owner is against the killing of snakes and his staff are forbidden to harm them. He said he’d call if he had anymore slithery friends. Always a pleasure dealing with people with this mindset,” said Evans.
