Residents unite to clean up Hillary area

The initiative was supported by numerous residents as well as the ward councillor, Samantha Windvogel.

RESIDENTS of Arundel Road and the surrounding community teamed up for a cleaning initiative on Saturday, July 31. The clean-up initiative was arranged by Justin Botha, who is the chairman of the Arundel Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) and organised by Shirley Moon, who is the cleaning and maintenance administrator of Arundel NHW.

The initiative, which was supported by numerous residents as well as the ward councillor, Samantha Windvogel, resulted in the collection of 95 rubbish bags which were filled with litter from the pavements along Arundel Road, Arthur Place, Radford Gardens, Albert King Place and Finlayson Place areas. Botha said the group has planned another clean-up initiative to tackle the Crescent, Kinmount Avenue and Arundel Gardens flats area on Saturday, August 14.

“We would like to make our neighbourhood area a litter-free zone, but this will only be possible if all residents are able to come aboard with the clean-up initiative, but anything is possible if our community is united in its vision,” said Botha. The clean-up crew also organised a bush clean-up initiative in the area on Saturday, August 7, when they cut back the bushes from properties as much as possible.

“We are also planning to give the wall under the Arundel train bridge a facelift by trying to gain approval to have a community mural painted on it to inspire the community and embrace our diversity that has brought us closer together during this trying time,” said Botha. He thanked all residents already involved in the community clean-up initiative who he believes is making the area a place that they can all be proud to live in. Botha also extended his gratitude to all community members who was involved in keeping the neighbourhoods safe during the unrest that took place three weeks ago.
