Kyle’s smarts set him apart

Kloof High School's SPAR Star of the Month - July 2021.

KLOOF High School’s head boy and SPAR Star of the Month is Kyle Kavanagh.

In 2020, Kyle wrote the National Life Sciences Olympiad and received a gold certificate and came second in South Africa among the 20 000 learners who took part.

A shortlist of candidates was identified by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement to write a selection test for the International Biology Olympiad (IBO). In early 2021, Kyle wrote this selection test and came second in South Africa again. The top four learners from this selection test qualified for the IBO. Sadly, due to Covid-19, the IBO which, was supposed to be held in July in Lisbon in Portugal, was cancelled.

The Olympiad and Selection Test was based on the South African CAPS Life Sciences syllabus. The IBO comprises of the Cambridge A-level syllabus which is equivalent to first and second year South African university content.

“When I was informed that I had come second in South Africa for this Olympiad, I was over the moon. I had to remember my syllabus from Grade 10 and 11 and put it to use when writing the selection test for the IBO. Once I had written the selection test, I awaited the results, not expecting too much. However, when I found out that I had qualified for the IBO, I was ecstatic as my hard work had paid off. I am wanting to study medicine next year, so I’m sure this would be a great help, especially in my applications for tertiary study,” he said.

Rob Holding, Kloof High School’s principal, said, “We are extremely proud of Kyle and all that he has achieved throughout his schooling career. Kyle attended all four Kloof schools and is the perfect example of how hard work and determination throughout your schooling career can, and will, pay off.”
