Residents encouraged to clean up rivers and stream

Instead of occasionally travelling to do beach clean-ups, river champion encouraged residents to do regular local clean-ups to prevent trash from heading to the beach and the Indian Ocean.

ADHERING strictly to Covid-19 protocols, river champs cleaned up the highly polluted Palmiet River catchment on Sunday.

River champion, Lee D’Eathe encouraged people to normalise cleaning their nearest street, drain, stream or river.

“Instead of occasionally travelling to do beach clean-ups, we should do regular local clean-ups.

“We should try and remove waste from our streets and verges to prevent trash from getting into the stormwater drains which carry plastic and other waste to streams, rivers estuaries, the beach and the Indian Ocean,” he said.

He said 12 bags of trash were removed from Harley Street stream and prevented from heading toward the Indian Ocean.

The Westville resident thanked everyone who helped to make a difference.

“A significant dent in this polluted part of the Palmiet Catchment. There are 45km of side-streams in the Palmiet Catchment.”

The trash was put in bags and left in the parking area for collection by Durban Solid Waste.
