Shopping centres, stores shut down across Highway amid protest action

Many of the shopping centres closed to ensure the safety of its staff and customers.

AFTER numerous stores were looted at the weekend, shopping centres and stores across the Highway area have opted to remain closed for today.

Many stores across the Highway area, including Knowles SuperSPAR and, more recently, Chelsea SPAR in New Germany, were targeted by protesters and looted.

The marketing manager for Hillcrest Corner and Watercrest Mall, Elizabeth Roux, the ongoing protest action across the Durban area was the reason behind the closure of the mall on July 12.

“We remain committed to minimising interruptions, however the safety of our staff and community remains our highest priority,” she said.

The Pavilion Shopping Centre’s marketing manager, Julie-Anne Zuma’s comment mirrored the comment released by the previous two shopping centres.

“For the safety and security of our tenants and shoppers, The Pavilion will not be trading today.”
