Teenager shot with rubber bullets at Waterfall mall

The public is urged to remain on high alert.

A 13-YEAR-OLD has been shot with rubber bullets after being caught in the cross fire with police at a Waterfall mall.

According to paramedic, Derick van Der Linde, SAPS and Metro police were on scene and have dispersed people from the mall.

“The situation is a bit calm at the moment,” he said.

Throughout the day, crowds of people have been seen with trolleys filled with alcohol, food and furniture items after they broke into various shops.

Chelsea Spar was also looted and vandalised this morning.

A video of masses of people standing outside a Westmead wholesaler with piles of groceries has also gone viral.

The shops in Pinetown, Hillcrest and New Germany have also been looted.

Car dealerships have also been targeted in various Durban areas. 

In some of the videos shared on social media the vehicle’s have been stripped of their engines and some of the cars’ wheels have been removed. 

The Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA), on behalf of SPAR, condemned the looting of retail shops and destruction of property in a press statement. 

“The loss to retailers, including the cost of damage to property and delivery vehicles, runs into millions of Rand and has already severely affected their operations. The potential impact on business viability and job security is also a serious cause for concern,” added the CGCSA.

The public has been advised to stay on alert.
