Pinetown social media artist’s song blows up

The rising star's song, Warning has reached over 160 000 views on YouTube and over 300 000 streams on Spotify.

WITH more than 160 000 views on YouTube and over 300 000 streams on Spotify in a month, aspiring Sarnia artist, Luthando Ndlovu is becoming a force to be reckoned with.

According to the rising star, who intends on pursuing a career in law, these figures still feel surreal. “I was shocked, I checked on the first day and the song, Warning, already had 10 000 streams,” he said.

The 20-year-old, who goes by the name of Blxck RIOTT, said when he writes and records a song, he does not limit himself to just one genre. He sings, raps and also includes hip hop, the popular amapiano and UK drill.

He said his interest for music started in high school. “I was inspired by my school mates, Lungelo and Thamsanqa. People loved their music but I was scared to pursue it.”

He said during that year, he researched apps which could help him create music. “I did one song and people were impressed. The following year, I was in matric and needed to focus on my studies so I took a break.

“After matric I started recording more, people were engaging and I had subscribers. It was just a steady growth but this song just blew up, I have never had so many streams,” he added.

He is also working on his Extended Play Record (EP) which has eight songs.

Patience is what fuelled Luthando’s passion. “I have uploaded 20 songs before this one. I work hard with the hope that things will get better. I take my music seriously with the dream of being signed under a record label company one day.

To build an audience, the up-and-coming artist said he also does lots of vlogging.

“My wish is to become recognised in my own country, the streams are from other countries and very few views in South Africa.

The former prefect at Queensburgh Boys’ High School said he hopes to study law next year.

“It has always been my dream. I do not see myself studying anything else. I have done a few short courses and internships but my dream is to become a lawyer,” he said.

He added that apart from music, he enjoys playing soccer, rugby, vlogging and sometimes baking and cooking.
