WESTVILLE’S loving couple, Terry and Lysiane Cholwich celebrated 50 years of wedded bliss on 12 June this year.
The couple first met in 1969. Terry, 27 at the time, was Lysiane’s (18) boss at a Standard Bank in Stanger. A month after they first met, Terry asked her out on a date. As he is an avid Elvis fan, he took her to watch the Elvis movie, Charro.
“I was clearly testing my future wife from the start,” he laughed.
It was on Lysiane’s 19th birthday, on 1 December in 1970, that he popped the question and the couple were engaged.
A few months later, the couple exchanged vows at a catholic church on 12 June in 1971. To celebrate their wedded bliss, they opted to visit Port St Johns for their honeymoon.
They have two children and they are the proud grandparents of four.

While they have done a fair bit of travel in their lives, their favourite place to visit was Port Alfred, a firm favourite for family trips as they were able to visit Terry’s childhood home.
Their daughter, Natalie Maccullum, said, “We also travelled all over South Africa when my brother and I were younger as my dad wanted us to see and appreciate our beautiful country.”
Terry continued to work at Standard Bank and retired in 1998 while Lysiane was a stay at home mom who took on numerous volunteer positions at local non-profit organisations.
While they said their bucket list is currently complete, they thoroughly enjoy their downtime and Lysiane fills hers with gardening, knitting and sewing while Terry said e enjoys listening to the classics.
“It’s time for us to grow old together and enjoy each other’s company,” said Lysiane.
They have lived in Westville for about 40 years and they currently dote on their little Yorkshire Terrier, Mia, who they both agreed runs their home.
To celebrate 50 years of marriage, they spent it with their children and grandchildren at home.
“As for the success of our long marriage, that comes from a respect for each other and acknowledge each other’s opinions,” they smiled.
