TMC learners go global with Round Square

Learners from Thomas More College recently hosted the global Round Square School Conference.

THOMAS More College recently undertook the mammoth task of hosting one of the first virtual annual international Round Square School Conferences.

Round Square, an organisation made up of more than 200 schools across 50 countries, aims to provide a platform for youth development from Grade 8 to matric by facilitating and empowering young leaders to organise youth conferences across the globe.

Conferences are largely structured and managed by the learners themselves, with teachers present to learn just as much as other attending delegates.

The recent conference, hosted by TMC, saw the participation of 300 delegates from 37 schools across 15 different countries. It explored the topic of Leadership for Our Time and visited past experiences as well as future visions to form a present idea of leadership. Learners from every continent – save for Antarctica – tuned in digitally to the conference to watch the presentations, breakout groups and leadership videos created and run entirely by TMC’s learners.

The CEO of the Durban ICC, Lindiwe Rakharebe attended as a guest speaker and shared her experiences of leadership as an empowered African woman in both a business environment and her everyday life.

“Thomas More College has been thrilled to be so involved in an organisation as expansive and prestigious as Round Square and we look forward to learning much more from conferences in the future, as we strive towards truly becoming tomorrow’s leaders today,” said TMC Round Square conference committee member, Justin Keep.
