Craig Sampson and Leon Mathurine take part in their first challenge and say they spent the evening playing cards and drinking whisky. "It's a great way to give back and to create awareness for an organisation that does so much great work," says Sampson.
TO help raise much-needed funds, the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s dedicated supporters were locked up for 24 hours as part of its annual Dog Box Challenge.
Visitors were encouraged to visit the D.O.G.s (doers of good) who were locked away and were also treated to a live fire dancer show while gin and tonic and craft beer was available on tap and the organisation’s Hidden Treasures Marquee was open until late.
While a handful of the ‘inmates’ chose to spend the night at the kennels, many more spent their evenings locked up in their makeshift kennels.
Lucille Mason, wo has been a part of rescue for more than 11 years, completes her fourth year in the Dog Box Challenge. Her usual kennel partner fell ill and her husband, Bruce, popped in with a stretcher to keep her company for the evening. “It was cozy and warm with my sleeping bag and it's a small price to pay for what the animals that aren't taken in go through,” she says.
In the Halloween themed kennel are Sonia And Gabriel Koenig. Sonia is on her seventh challenge while her son completes his fourth. “It feels nice to support friends, family and especially the animals,” said Gabriel.
Megan Stow and Anita Van Aswegen said that while the evening was cold, it was fun and reminded them both of what the animals go through. “It shows you how lucky the animals are that are picked up and taken in by the Kloof SPCA as they can sleep under a heater,” said Stow.
Gaynor Swanepoel and Taryn O'Carroll create a Christmas themed dog box. “We want to create something that people could be happy about during Covid-19,” says Swanepoel.
Shane Cox and his son, Calvin, spent the evening in one of the kennels in memory of his sister, Cherise, and all fallen emergency staff. “This year, we have been blessed and it amazes me each year how we reach our goal,” said Cox.
