WOZA Moya’s Artist’s Wall has found a 12-month sponsor and the first work of art to be showcased in the niche spot is by the talented Sibusiso Duma.
Born in Mbumbulu, where he currently still works and resides, Duma said his artistic journey began with crayons and colour pencils from an early age.
His talent was noticed and nourished by his school teachers and the late Trevor Makhoba, through his Philange Art Project in Umlazi. Duma has since built his own style and visual language. It is his originality and sometimes challenging subject matter that sets him apart.

He uses familiar iconography such as the human figure in a rural landscape in his images and there are often contradictions between rural and urban themes. It is his passion and love for the rural landscape and tradition that he ensures is always present in his work.
His paintings often use humour and satire to help viewers better understand the present social conditions. The use of personal iconography and metaphors harvested from everyday life manifests a fine balance between fantasy and reality in his pieces. Duma’s work has been collected by multiple galleries and museums, locally and abroad.

We would like to thank the 100% Foundation for coming on board for a 12-month sponsorship and making this monthly event possible. Sibusiso Duma is the first artist, who will be featured for the month of June. We are looking forward to meeting 12 new artists from our area,” said Woza Moya’s executive manager, Paula Thomson.
