Join hands with Pinetown couple’s food drive

With the growing number of people needing assistance, the couple is in need of volunteers. They also sent out a plea to businesses, schools and individuals to assist with food.

PASSIONATE about filling tummies with food and hearts with joy, Pinetown couple, Hoosen and Steph Amod’s feeding project continues to make a difference in the lives of the less privileged.

The Amods began their feeding project in Pinetown in 2019 through their soup kitchen, El Gibbor Kitchen 3610 (‘mighty God’ in Hebrew).

The couple took over from Heaven’s Kitchen 3610 which was started by Kayleigh Symes who relocated to Cape Town.

From the beginning of the lockdown, the passionate couple joined a group of NPOs who fed the homeless sheltered at Lahee Park.

After the homeless were moved to Durban, the Amod couple continued with their project and still travel to the City to provide the homeless with food at two different venues.

The duo also hosts a soup kitchen in Old Main Road every Monday and Thursday afternoon.

“We feed about 200 people,” said Hoosen.

“We do what we do with love as we have seen many of the homeless change and return to their families. Others have even found jobs. With love and support, people can make a big difference, everyone deserves a second chance,” said Steph.

One of the success stories that stand out for them is the story of Lionel Ngweda, a young man who resides in the Durban tents.

“Lionel moved from Mpumalanga to look for a job and found himself stranded with no income. He has changed his life incredibly while also uplifting others.

With the R350 Covid-19 relief grant coupled with his creativity, Lionel decided to produce beautiful bags.

“He taught himself to sew. He started by hand stitching his bags and has now bought four sewing machines. He is now able to send money home and has employed other people at the shelter,” said a proud Hoosen.

With the growing number of people needing assistance, the couple said they appeal to businesses, schools and individuals to assist with food.

“We are really struggling and we are in need of volunteers, every bit helps,” said Steph.
