Neighbourhood rallies for railway clean up

A handful of residents gathered along the railway line in Pinetown and held a clean up to create a safer route for patrollers.

EQUIPPED with brush cutters, bush knives and pangas, a dedicated team of volunteers joined in to support the Glen Park Neighbourhood Watch’s clean up along the railway line at the weekend.

“We are battling to patrol the railway lines from Sarnia to Pinetown station by using the dirt road as the bushes took over due to lack of maintenance,” said Glen Park Neighbourhood Watch’s, Marinus Du Plessis.

The team said that before they began work on the stretch, there was hardly enough space for a motorcycle to fit through.

“This was a major concern as we like to patrol this area and it also helps us when responding to incidents. We had to keep this road open, or we going to find ourselves with even bigger problems,” he said.

During the clean up, the team noted the stripped electrical cables, women’s hand bags and other stolen property such as computer screens, cellphones and laptop bags.

“It is clear the criminals are having a feast in our area with muggings and cable theft,” said Du Plessis.

After the clean up along the stretch of railway, the team had a braai to celebrate.
