Highway’s snake expert rescues three Black Mambas

From Shongweni to Westville and Verulam, Nick Evans was called out to retrieve three of the deadly reptiles in one day.

AFTER what Highway’s snake catcher, Nick Evans, described as a Black Mamba drought, he was called out to retrieve three of the deadly reptiles across the greater Durban area yesterday.

His first port of call was at a property in Shongweni.

Evans noted the homeowner was clearing out a shipping container on the Upper Highway property when the Black Mamba was spotted.

“Of course, when I arrived, it was nowhere to be seen. We cleared out almost the entire storeroom before finding it in a place I did not expect – inside a rolled up mat!” said Evans.

Easy for the pickings, Evans caught the 2.3m snake.

He was then called to Westville where a Black Mamba was spotted in the roof of an outbuilding.

With the help of the homeowner and his employees, the roof was lifted slightly to allow for Evans to remove the 2.1m reptile.

A third Black Mamba was spotted slithering into a garage in Verulam and Evans responded swiftly to the call. He described it as a quick and easy catch.

The third Black Mamba measured in at 2.2m.
