Help empower Dawede Primary learners

The staff and principal at the school hope to create a beautiful and clean space for their charges to learn.

THE caring team of educators at Dawede Primary School have called on the support of the Highway community to help repaint the classrooms, fill up the shelves in the school’s budding library and help create a beautiful space to nurture young minds.

Sbongile Zwane, the school’s dedicated principal, said the school has 291 children and covers Grade R to Grade 4.

“We are a small school but would like to have more learners make use of our facilities and increase education across Molweni. When you have a beautiful, clean and tidy environment, you want to go in and learn,” she said.

The Department of Education allocates R50 000 to the school per annum which, according to Zwane, does not cover its utility bills. Any upgrades or revamps needed, the staff at the school host fundraisers to ensure the learners are never left wanting.

“We do fundraising so we can pay for ink and copies as we want our school to function well. I want to change the lives of the community and the children of Molweni,” said a positive Zwane.

Even with no budget, the staff were able to fill a few wooden and metal shelves with a broad selection of books.

The library, which was originally housed in a Wendy hut, has since moved into one of the classrooms in the hopes of creating a safer, more open space for learning.

Gugu Mabaso, a Grade R educator, also took up the mantle of librarian and coordinator, and hopes to see the library flourish.

“We are in desperate need of wooden shelves that are just the right height for our young learners. With this, we are also in need of as many age-appropriate books as well,” she said.

Zwane said there are children at her school with parents who are unable to afford to feed them and many more who live in child-headed households.

“Despite everything that they face on a daily basis, I am so proud of them and how far they have come. I want to create a safe, beautiful space for them to come to each day,” she said.

A long-term volunteer at the school, Hannah Britz, described the staff as hard-working and all worked towards the goal of bringing out the best in each child in their care.

“They are always in the classrooms with the children and are constantly helping to uplift and empower each one. It is so wonderful to witness,” she said.
