Food Lover’s Market launches Hunger Month campaign

The national company hopes to exceed the number of meals donated in 2020.

FOOD Lover’s Market and its partners launched the fifth consecutive Hunger Month campaign and aim to exceed the one million meals contributed in 2020.

The CSI manager for Food Lover’s Market, Kate Marais, noted the supply of food to vulnerable persons in South Africa was under pressure as it is estimated that 14 million people go to bed hungry each day.

“Seventy per cent of households in South Africa’s informal settlements are skipping meals, or eating just one meal a day,” said Marais.

This is the fifth consecutive Hunger Month campaign undertaken by the retailer. The fresh produce retailer has partnered with Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing, Simpl Juice, Westfalia Fruit, Crest Shelf potatoes and onions, and ZZ2 tomatoes for the month-long in-store campaign. It is aimed at encouraging consumers to contribute a meal to FoodForward SA by purchasing partner products.

Marais noted that typical diets are based mainly on starches such as maize, rice and bread with little protein or nutritious fruit and vegetables.

“This, leads to 27 per cent of South African children being stunted,” she said.

By partnering with FoodForward SA, the largest food recovery organisation in South Africa, Food Lover’s Market and the Hunger Month partners hope to reach and exceed 1 million meals through its ‘contribute a meal’ mechanism. Any of the partner products, purchased between 1 May and 28 May 2021, will contribute the required R0.85 needed to provide one meal to a hungry person through FoodForward SA.

Shoppers can show their support by purchasing any of the products in any Food Lover’s Market stores:

Tru-Cape: 1.5kg Econopak apples and pears; ZZ2: All varieties of 6kg tomatoes ;Simpl juice: All varieties of 1.5l juice; Westfalia: A box of avocados; Crest Shelf: 7kg pocket of potatoes.

All Hunger Month products will be clearly marked in stores.
