Double Green Mamba rescue for Highway snake catcher

Each of the two Green Mambas was more than 1.7m in length.

HIGHWAY’S snake catcher, Nick Evans was called to help retrieve two Green Mambas on the south coast in Adams Rural.

His friend and fellow snake rescuer, Miguel da Fonseca, contacted him to help retrieve what they thought would just be one snake.

The mamba was spotted in a tree on the edge of a thicket along a pathway.

“Seeing it, I understood why people were concerned about it. They thought it would bite passersby. However, knowing mambas, I knew that the chance of this was next to none,” said Evans.

The team walked down to the thicket where the mamba was.

With some maneuvering, da Fonseca was able to reach out and grab the snake with tongs.

The snake was then down to Evans who secured the head without much fuss.

“The next thing, the community members in attendance started saying there was another one. Only once have I ever had a scenario where there really was two, despite my doubts,” said Evans.

The pair looked up and spotted a second Green Mamba higher up in the tree. It was moving in their direction but quickly veered off.

Evans said it was terrified by the sheer number of people in the vicinity. da Fonseca calmly reached out and grabbed and secured the snake.

“Two mambas in a tree? Unbelievable and so unexpected! The community were so happy and grateful the snakes were being taken away,” said Evans.

Both of the snakes, a male and female, were just over 1.7m long. The pair will be released together soon.
