Highway charity ‘kniterally’ makes the best donation

The Highway Charity Knitters donated bags upon bags of handmade items as well as second-hand goods to The Ark in Peacevale.

AFTER months of work, the Highway Charity Knitters donated bags filled with knitted, sewn and crocheted items for the 85 residents at The Ark in Peacevale.

The group started with three women meeting at the Kloof Library in 2016 and, over the years grew to 22.

With the lockdown and members moving, the group now consists of 16 dedicated members who want nothing more than to give back.

Two members from the group visited the empowerment organisation to drop off bags of goodies that included second-hand clothing and shoes as well as handmade blankets, quilts, beanies and scarves.

There are 85 residents at The Ark – a shelter for men. The organisation’s manager, George Pretorius, said there were various income-generating activities that were always on the go and these include worm composting, a recycling centre, the second-hand store, nursery/garden centre, waffle and coffee shop and restaurant.

There are future plans to cultivate hydroponic vegetables. Another hope is to create separate shelters for women, children, pensioners and families.

“We are under the guidance and support of City Hill Church in Hillcrest and appreciate all the help from our Upper Highway community, in particular the biking clubs that frequent the restaurant,” he said.

The Ark restaurant is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday.

“We knit for various charities supported by churches in the Upper Highway area and welcome anyone who would like to join us. Wool and Weave Hillcrest have very generously donated wool and we would appreciate any further donations of wool – even wool oddments and fabric as one of our ladies also creates stunning quilts for the needy,” said the club’s chairman, Linda Winfield.

The group meets each Friday morning for two hours. For details, contact Linda Winfield on 082 851 2554.
