Kloof Rotarians deck out local nature reserve

With support from Kloof Rotarians and the Kloof Rotary Anns, the Iphithi Nature Reserve received a massive upgrade recently.

TO create a safer and more enjoyable experience for Iphithi Nature Reserve visitors, a volunteer workforce from The Rotary Club of Kloof put in numerous hours to rebuild the on-site viewing deck.

“The Iphithi Nature Reserve should be viewed as one of the great environmental success stories in the Highway area, where it was becoming the norm for nature to give way to development of high density housing,” said the Rotary Club of Kloof’s president, Reg Courtney.

He noted that 20 years ago the reserve was little more than an ecological desert and is now teeming with life in all forms.

“Birds, animals and indigenous vegetation are rapidly returning to the reserve and new sightings are recorded on a regular basis. It is rapidly gaining in popularity and the viewing deck is a great attraction for sun-downers, or just relaxing and enjoying the view,” he said.

To be able to support environmental projects such as the Iphithi Nature Reserve, alongside the Gillitts Conservancy, is one of the highest priorities for the local Rotary club.

The Iphithi Nature Reserve’s Wall of Remembrance was recently upgraded and cleaned by the Kloof Rotary Anns and a new garden was planted at the base of the wall. The wall was initially built for Rotarians and Rotary Anns to remember their loved ones in the environmentally idyllic reserve. However, for some time now, the Wall of Remembrance has been made available to members of the Upper Highway community who wish to remember their loved ones. To apply to have a plaque placed on the wall, contact Brian Collinge on 083 310 8431.
