Ashley dog walk park and nature reserve turns into a dumpsite

A concerned resident appealed to the public to take responsibility and dispose their waste in a correct manner.

A CAVERSHAM Glen natural area and dog park is slowly turning into a dumpsite.

Avid walker, Dade Mbhele said the litter and rubbish bags strewn in the vicinity of the park and on the pavement is disturbing.

“It is so discouraging to see diapers while jogging in the morning.”

Mbhele said the municipality tries to clean up the area from time to time but it needs to be done frequently.

The Ashley resident, who has resided in the area for 11 years, said they would not be facing this problem if people were responsible and disposed of their waste in the correct manner.

“People need to wait for their refuse bags to be picked up. People throw all kinds of items including old furniture. The grass is also overgrown but the dumping is the worst for me. This is affecting the natural environment. We can not stay in a dumpsite. It just not right,” she said

Positioned in the corner of Mariannridge Road, is a camera and a sign which reads, ‘smile you on camera, no dumping here’.

According to residents, this does serve as a deterrent as people have stopped dumping at the nature reserve.

“The problem now is the dog park, people are continuing to dump there,” she said.

Another resident, Miles Moodley said he witnessed a resident in a bakkie offloading rubbish.

A TV was found recently and Moodley said the park has not only just became an eyesore, but is also a hiding spot for thieves.

“We appeal to the municipality to maintain the area and for people to stop using it as a dumping ground,” he said.
