Pinetown copper thief caught red handed

The thief cut one of the armed response officers with a small knife.

A COPPER pipe thief was apprehended and arrested while attempting to flee after breaking into a business premises on Richmond Road recently.

A security company’s control room received an alarm activation at a Pinetown business and two armed response officers (ARO) were dispatched to the scene.

The AROs, Ntlakhanipho Ntuli and Siphamandla Mabida, noted a security gate had been broken and the door was forced open. The thief used a fire extinguisher to break copper pipes and valves off of the wall.

“Not long after entering the premises, the officers spotted a suspect attempting to flee and gave chase. The suspect resisted and lashed out with a small knife, cutting one of the officers on his right forearm. Despite his efforts to get away, the suspect was successfully apprehended and handed over for arrest to members of the local SAPS,” said Fidelity ADT’s district manager for KwaZulu-Natal, Vaughan Pillay.

The injured officer was transported to Crompton Hospital for medical treatment.
