Val and Don Bell celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, 27 March.

“Val was the first woman to learn how to run a printing machine and that attracted me to her. She was unique and did hard labour jobs which were labelled as a ‘man’s job’.

“I have the best wife, she is helpful, loyal and a very intelligent woman,” he said.

The couple grew up in Rhodesia, now known as Zimbabwe, and were married at a registry office on 27 March 1971.

For the bubbly Val, it was Don’s caring nature that attracted her to husband.

“He is a gentleman, has been a good provider, awesome husband and father to our three children and now a great grandfather of four. I would choose to marry him over again, he has been wonderful,” said Val.

When asked about their recipe for a successful marriage, Don said people need to love, pray for and respect each other. “Love is a two way street, you both need to work at it,” he said.

“We took a vow and stuck to it. We meant it when we said we will love each other for better or for worse and believe me sometimes the worst does come out,” laughed Val.

She advised young people to not rush into marriage and wait for the right person.

Don worked at the printing company for many years before retiring, Val worked as a traffic warden at Benjamin Pine.

Now that they are retired, they both enjoy working in the garden and Val loves knitting.
