TWO taxi drivers, Lizwi Shezi (36) and Sandile Khumalo (38), appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday (16 March) on charges of murder and malicious damage to property and were each granted R2 000 bail.
According to KZN SAPS spokesman, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, it was reported that Sandile Handsome Majola, a 26-year-old e-hailing driver, was accused of transporting criminals who were thought to have committed robberies in the Tshelimnyama area.
It is alleged that, because of these accusations, he was assaulted by the community.
He was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.
“His vehicle was also set alight by the unruly crowd. Charges of murder and malicious damage to property were opened for investigation at Mariannhill SAPS,” said Mbele.
Police officers from the Provincial Vehicle and Trio Task Team, together with the investigating officer assigned to investigate the docket, traced the suspects on 15 March and arrested two of them at the Pinetown taxi rank.
