Man arrested for Southway Mall car guard’s murder

The man, who was in hiding after being named as a suspect in a murder case last year, made the mistake of trying to attack an eye witness.

DETECTIVES from Bellair SAPS arrested a man who allegedly murdered a car guard who was trying to foil the theft of car batteries at Southway Mall.

The man, who has been on the lam since the killing over a year ago, is now behind bars and is facing multiple charges, including new charges relating to his alleged attempt to assault an eyewitness.

“The sterling investigation by members of Bellair SAPS detectives led to the arrest of one suspect involved in a murder which occurred at Southway Mall in February 2020,” said the station’s spokesperson, Sgt Pam Pillay.

Pillay described the victim of the alleged murder as a popular attendant at the Rossburgh centre known for being a reliable guard.

“It was during his duty at Southway Mall that the victim attempted to prevent the theft of vehicle batteries when he was attacked by the suspect who inflicted fatal injuries on the victim,” said Pillay.

“A year later the suspect attempted to attack the eye witness to the murder by assaulting him with a steel pole causing severe injuries to his face. A case of assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) was opened,” said Pillay.

The new attack was just the break needed to lead detectives to the suspect’s residence.

“He was pointed out by the witness and arrested on charges of murder and assault GBH,” said Pillay.

Acting Station Commander, Captain Dladla, commended the members for their commitment, dedication and the investigation.

The suspect will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court once he is formally charged.
