TO celebrate the founder of the world-wide Scout Movement’s birthday, the 1st Cowies Hill Cub Scouts will host a clean-up at Westville Cemetery.
Robert Baden-Powell’s birthday is celebrated on 22 February by all scouts around the world.

“Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we most likely won’t be able to participate in any face to face events, but we are Scouts and that won’t stop us from making our world a little better,” said assistant pack Scouter, Ross Andrew.
Baden Powell’s motto was ‘try and leave this world a little better than you found it’.

“So taking into account the Covid-19 safety precautions, during the month of February, Meerkat, Cub and Scout groups all over South Africa are collaborating their efforts to do just that,” said Andrew.
This will be the club’s second clean up during the month of February as on Saturday, 13 February, one Meerkat, seven Cubs, two Scouts and various parents, had a delightful three hour walk through the trail and picked up 10 bags of litter from the riverbed as well as among the trees.

In their last clean-up, Andrew said besides the normal plastic waste, some of the strangest things picked up were items of clothing, a baby’s drinking bottle, dead batteries, a dog’s leash and a ballpoint pen.
“It certainly makes you think of all your household items that are thrown away and make their way into our environment.”
He added that the public is welcome to join them on the clean-up which they are hosting in conjunction with The Westville Conservancy and Keep Westville Beautiful.
Andrew invited the public to join their clean up this Saturday, 27 February from 9am to 12pm at the Westville Cemetery just off Norfolk Terrace in Glenridge Road.
People must take disposable gloves, four black bags as well as their own picnic and must not forget your masks.
If a Scout group collectively collects 20 bags or more they will receive a digital commemorative certificate from Scouts South Africa recording their achievement at making a positive difference in these times.
