Pinetown raw sewage flows into Umbilo River

The leak, which has been a problem since January has worsened with raw sewage flowing into the river.

AN irate Pinetown resident is questioning the municipality’s sense of urgency when it comes to vital service delivery.

Anthony Pandaram said after two weeks of reporting a sewer leak on Nelson Road, which is flowing straight to the Umbilo River, the problem has not been solved.

“Last week, after many complaints, the municipality staff came over, jumped off the truck, had a look and left and never came back,” he said, adding that the issue has worsened with the awful stench.

When Pandaram first called on 29 January, he informed the operator about the seriousness of the problem. He informed the operator the river is becoming polluted by the sewer water that runs into the storm water pipe and gets dislodged in the river below.

“The operator said they will mark it as urgent.” On 1 February, the concerned resident said, a person from the municipality sent him a WhatsApp message and asked if the problem is still persisting.

“I replied yes but did not say anything after that. No further correspondence was received after that.

“No one seems to care. We are surrounded by a bad smell, the river is getting polluted, the flora and fauna is affected. There have been so many complaints about burst pipes, overflowing manholes, is there a permanent go slow that we do not know about?” he asked.

The Highway Mail did try to get a response from the municipality but had not received any feedback by the time of going to print.
