Elderly Pinetown couple accosted by two armed thieves

The thieves tried to lock the wife in a cupboard after they cable-tied the husband to a balustrade.

AN elderly Pinetown couple was assaulted in their home by two armed robbers in their Bradford Place home on Monday morning.

The pensioners, who are in their 70s, were busy with household chores when two men, one armed with a gun and the other with a knife, entered the property.

According to Blue Security’s community and media liaison officer, Andreas Mathios, the husband had just gone upstairs while his wife was hanging the washing.

“The two suspects gained access to the house through the open front door. The homeowner was coming down the stairs when he saw the suspects inside the house, busy removing the television from the wall unit,” said Mathios.

The man was tied to a balustrade on the staircase with cable ties after he tried to confront the two robbers.

The thieves then attempted to lock the wife into a cupboard.

“After unsuccessfully trying to force their female victim into a cupboard, they resorted to locking her into the bathroom,” said Mathios.

The suspects drove off, in an undisclosed direction, in the family’s vehicle, a silver VW Polo Vivo. They also stole a TV set and cash.

“No shots were fired and no-one was injured even though the homeowner had narrowly avoided being stabbed during the scuffle and the couple were left severely traumatised,” said Mathios.
