KZN Rotarians make a ‘wheely’ big difference

More than 200 wheelchairs were donated to be distributed throughout KZN by local Rotary clubs.

A SHIPPING container’s worth of wheelchairs was recently donated by a Rotary Club of Surfers Sunrise in Brisbane, that teamed up with its KwaZulu-Natal counterparts, to be handed out to those in need.

The 220 wheelchairs were unpacked at Rob Campbell’s warehouse in New Germany. The Rotary Club of Reservoir Hills’ spokesman, Charlie Panday said a team in Australia, which included Charmaine Wheatley, Colin Laurenson and Charles Thomasson, worked tirelessly to put the consignment together.

Panday said the project was initiated by a former South African, Charmaine Wheatley, who now resides in Australia. In the previous donation sent by the Australian Rotarians, tested spectacles, school furniture, wheelchairs and toys were sent and then distributed to the needy and underprivileged.

The following Rotary clubs will be handling the distribution in Reservoir Hills, Hillcrest, Phoenix, Mandini, Port Alfred, Kenton-on-sea, Klerksdorp, Welkom and Maluti, Maseru and Lesotho.
